Open defecation (OD) or the practice of passing feces outside a latrine or toilet is deemed by the Department of Health (DOH) to have consequences that affect the health, economic status, dignity of life, and the surrounding environment of people in the community. The Zero Open Defecation Program (ZOPD) was implemented in Buenavista, Quezon by the Municipal Health Office and then transferred to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office. It has been successful in encouraging the community to have sanitary toilets in each household which significantly decrease incidences of malnutrition and diarrhea.
